my grandmothers cabinets are knotty pine and the varnish is ate up where the knobs are. please help?

do l have to strip them or can l restain the lighter worn areas and

Strip 'em, sand 'em, and paint them any color you like. If your new pulls

are attached differently, fill in the existing hole w/glue & sawdust (from

the sander), and drill new ones.  
 
You could try taking them down and cleaning them, but any ''touch-up''
